Tooth Selection by Inch
You must select the correct teeth per inch (TPI) for the thickness of the material you intend to cut. If the correct TPI is not chosen, the life of the band saw blade will be drastically reduced. Selecting the TPI is undoubtedly the most important decision when selecting a band saw blade.

The number of TPI defines the pitch of the blade and can range from 1 to 32 TPI. On some band saw blades, there are different pitches on the same blade, called "Vari-Pitch". TPI is measured from gullet to gullet, not from tip to tip of the tooth - this is known as the pitch.
The general rule is:
• For wood and soft materials, choose 3 - 6 teeth.
• For metals and harder materials, aim for 6 to 24 teeth.
Some things to note:
• Few teeth can damage the work and break them.
• Many teeth can overload the gullet and break the teeth.
Use the band saw teeth per inch chart below to select the ideal TPI for your project needs.
