Tooth Per Inch Selection
You must select the correct teeth per inch (TPI) for the thickness of the material you intend to cut. If the correct TPI is not chosen, the life of the band saw blade will be drastically reduced. TPI selection is undoubtedly the most important decision when selecting a band saw blade.

The number of TPI defines the blade pitch and can range from 1 to 32 TPI. On some band saw blades, there are different pitches on the same blade, called "Vari-Pitch". TPI is measured from gullet to gullet, not from tooth tip to tooth tip - this is known as the pitch.
The general rule is:
• For wood and soft materials, choose 3 - 6 teeth.
• For metals and harder materials, aim to have 6 to 24 teeth.
Some things to note:
• Too few teeth can damage the work and break them.
• Too many teeth can cause gullet overload and break the teeth.
Use the band saw teeth per inch chart below to select the ideal TPI for your project needs.
