S-Hooks

When a tree is cut down in the forest and not taken to the sawmill within a reasonable time the drying saps, rainfall and dew work on the wood and the precious trunk begins to split and to crack.

As a result, the economic value of the timber decreases considerably. In order to avoid this loss, the S-hook is driven into the core of the trunk with an axe or a hammer. The bent ends of the hook keep the wood perfectly safe together. Prior to further treatment of the trunk, the hook is removed again.

S-hooks are also an important means to stabilize the hardwood of railways sleepers. They are fixed to both face ends and thus prevent splitting of the sleepers.
